Every "best abaya brands" list I've read treats abayas like one market with a few designer outliers. They're not. I went through every abaya listed across the directory — 5,213 pieces, 91 houses — and priced each house by its median. The spread runs from $7 to $517. That's not a range with a few expensive edge cases in it. It's two different shopping trips.
The everyday range
Most houses cluster here, and it's genuinely crowded — dozens of brands between $30 and roughly $230, with no clean break anywhere inside it. Four worth knowing:
Losyana (Nijmegen, Netherlands) — 71 pieces, median $35. The Emirate Abaya in black is the house at its plainest: closed-front, no embellishment, the kind of thing you buy three of.
Bayt El Hayat (UK) — 76 pieces, median $50. The Beige Ribbed Abaya is a plainer, more considered version of the same everyday brief.
Nour Al Houda / BNAH (Sydney) — 129 pieces, median $56. The Crinkle Batwing Abaya in moss is a genuinely different silhouette at this price point — the batwing sleeve isn't a budget-house standard.
Beyza (Istanbul) — 126 pieces, median $57. Their caped abaya is the one piece here that reads more structured than its price.
Where it gets more particular
Same market, further up the same curve — nothing separates this band from the one above it, but the tailoring, the fabric weight and the styling ambition start to change.
Aab (London) — 271 pieces, median $94. The Cascade Kaftan in black is closer to eveningwear than to a daily abaya.
AbayaButh (UK) — the second-largest catalogue on the site, 564 pieces, median $95. Their frill-detailed khimar set is a full coordinated look, not a single garment.
Rutba Fashion Abaya (Dubai) — 253 pieces, median $122. The leaf-embroidery, stone-work abaya is embellishment-forward in a way the under-$60 band mostly isn't.
Kamin (Dubai) — 292 pieces, median $169. Contemporary tailoring is the whole pitch; The Maha is a clean, structured cut with none of the embellishment Rutba leans on.
Aeon Abaya (Kuwait City) — 413 pieces, median $194, the top of this band. The open-front bisht abaya borrows from menswear's most formal layer and reworks it.
The actual gap
Here's the one hard number in this piece: sort all 91 houses by median price and there is a real, empty gap between $231 and $295 — sixty-four dollars with not a single house's median inside it. Everything below that line is one continuous market. Everything above it is a different one — seven houses, all clustered from $295 to $517, several of them (CHI-KA, Illi Studio, Almotahajiba) among the highest-volume abaya houses on the site, so this isn't a handful of one-off boutique pieces padding out a top shelf. It's a real, separately-supplied tier.
The atelier tier
Latifi (Dubai) — 18 pieces, median $295, sitting right at the line. Set-designed and occasion-first; the Butterfly kaftan is built for an event, not a Tuesday.
Cult Abaya (Dubai) — 25 pieces, median $381. Campaign photography, zero florals in the whole catalogue. Their Black Abaya is deliberately the plainest thing they sell, which at this price is its own kind of statement.
Illi Studio (Dubai) — 141 pieces, median $395, and one of the biggest abaya houses in the directory by volume despite the price. ELAINE, in brown and teal, is colour-blocked in a way nothing in the lower bands attempts.
Almotahajiba (Doha) — 55 pieces, median $467. One of the oldest, most established names in the directory's abaya category; Ivory Edge is closer to formalwear than to daywear.
CHI-KA (Dubai) — 195 pieces, median $517, the highest in the category — and, like Illi Studio, high-volume rather than a tiny capsule. The striped kaftan in white is the most minimal piece at this price point in the whole roundup.
If you're shopping under $200, you're in one enormous, continuous market — price alone won't tell you much about a house's style, and the difference between a $95 abaya and a $190 one is mostly tailoring and finish, not exclusivity. Above $295, you're somewhere else entirely, and the gap in between is real, not a rounding artefact of how I split the data.
